The Premier League returns from the international break with a cracking round of fixtures, and with only 7-9 matches left, Fergie’s beloved “squeaky bum time” is upon us! Nothing will be left in reserve as team’s fight for the title, Champions League places and to stay in the division.

12:45 Aston Villa – Chelsea

Villa haven’t scored in their last three matches and are heading inevitably towards the Championship. With only a win and a draw in their last ten games, the distance to safety has widened to a hopeless twelve points.

If the Villains season has been a disaster, Chelsea aren’t far behind. 10th in the Premier League with no cups to fight for and the Champions League spots a distant ten points away it’s shaping up to be the worst season of the Abramovich era.

In terms of material Chelsea are obviously a class or few above. However, the star players’ motivation can be questioned in a dead rubber like this, especially defensively, tracking back etc.

Aston Villa have the home advantage and have the potential to cause an upset if Chelsea don’t show up on the day. In a meaningless fixture the potential for a goal-fest is high, so we’re looking at over-bets for tomorrow’s lunchtime kick-off.

15:00 Norwich – Newcastle

Out of the three-o’clock matches, the most interesting one is contested between Norwich and Newcastle. This match will have huge implications on who’ll be facing the drop come the end of the season. In their last game, Norwich stole the points from West Brom with a 0-1 win, while Newcastle snatched a late point in the derby against Sunderland. Newcastle come into the match second-to-last with Norwich three points ahead of them just above the drop zone.

Previous meetings between the sides have gone Newcastle’s way, with the Canaries winless in the last six. The last game between the two sides finished with an amazing 6-2 score-line. However, Norwich have picked up some form with no losses in three at Carrow Road.

With so much at stake, a tight affair is a given, and with Rafa Benitez still in the middle of his honeymoon period, the Magpies are a dangerous prospect. Home advantage counts for little in a game of this magnitude, and with the bookie’s severely overlooking Newcastle’s chances we’re putting our money on them as a slight risk.

17:30 Liverpool – Tottenham

A defeat against West Ham and a draw in the derby with Arsenal haven’t scuppered Spurs’ title chances, as they comfortably defeated Aston Villa and Bournemouth. Saturday will be a much tougher test though, as Spurs travel to Anfield.

‘Pool have been a tough opponent for the Lilywhites in recent years, with the Reds taking all three points in five of the last six meetings between the side with Spurs recording only one draw. That draw came earlier this season with a 0-0 draw at White Hart Lane.

Spurs were knocked out of the Europa League by Dortmund, so all their eggs are in one basket, the Premier League. Meanwhile Liverpool managed to eliminate rivals Manchester United from the same European competition, lifting spirits after a difficult season so far. Winning the Europa League presents the Reds with an outside chance of qualifying for the Champions League, a matter not to be taken lightly. Spurs on the other hand have almost ensured their place in Europe’s top competition and will be focusing entirely on the title run-in against Leicester City.

Leicester have a five-point gap on Tottenham, while Liverpool are 9th with a game in hand. 4th place isn’t impossible for ‘Pool, but a seven point difference to claw back is not an enviable position.

The Reds have improved offensively after Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, but defensively they remain suspect. The Merseysiders have leaked in 16 goals more than their rivals on the night. The Spurs defence has had a fantastic season, especially away from home, meaning a goal-shy affair could be likely.

Although the Anfield crowd can be intimidating, Spurs will take some stopping on Saturday. A chance for the title hasn’t been realistic for a long time, so a tight affair can be expected.

With goals galore unlikely, the prospect of a draw is well and truly on the cards. Liverpool are no favourites. In terms of the odds on offer, the best choices are Spurs with “draw no bet” and under-bets.
