EURO 2016: SPOTLIGHT ON POLAND

Poland had an impressive qualifying campaign, led by star-striker Robert Lewandowski. The 21 points they collected was enough for second place in their qualifying group, earning them a straight spot for the finals. The Poles suffered only one defeat in the qualifiers, and that was to world champions Germany, whom they beat 2-0 at home after a fantastic performance.

Bayern Munich's Lewandowski was the top scorer of the qualifiers with a staggering 13 goals. It's clear who has to perform in France this summer if the Poles want to taste even moderate success. Their strength is their attack, but there are quality players in every position on the pitch.

Poland's preliminary squad for Euro 2016 has 27 players, so a few will not be making the trip to France as squads have to be cut to 23 players before the tournament starts.

ASSESMENT AND PREVIEW

With 33 goals, Poland were the top scorers in the qualifiers. However, the stat counts for little as 15 of those goals came against the worst side in the qualifiers, Gibraltar. Despite this it can be said that Poland are a really interesting side going into Euro 2016 with plenty of potential.

Bayern-star Lewandowski is without a doubt Poland's most important player, but his strike partner Arkadiusz of Ajax is also a note-worthy goalscorer. At only 22 years of age Milik scored 21 times in the Eredivisie this season in only 31 games, and with five goals in the qualifiers to boot Poland's frontline is one of the most dangerous in the tournament.

Poland's Achilles' heel is their defence, as Łukasz Piszczek of Dortmund and Torino's Kamil Glik are the only names worthy of note in the Poles back-four. Goalkeeping isn't an issue for the Poles, as any of their three goalkeepers could go between the sticks in France.

As said previously, Polands Euro-squad is a good blend of skill, cunning, physicality and heart. Their defeat of Germany in the qualifiers showed that on their day Poland can be a match for anyone, so only a complete meltdown will stop them from progressing from their group.

Defenders: Piszczek, Glik, Pazdan, Wawrzyniak

Midfielders: Błaszczykowski, Krychowiak, Zieliński, Grosicki

Forwards: Milik, Lewandowski

Key Player: Robert Lewandowski, Bayern Munich

The Bayern Munich striker rose into the elite bracket of footballers this season, if not before. Lewandowski fired an amazing 44 goals in 48 games for Bayern this season, while he also won the Golden Boot for the qualifiers with 13 goals. Lewandowski is the best pure striker in the tournament, and even though Poland aren't favoured to go very far his name isn't far from any conversation involving the Golden Boot. A magical finisher.
