EURO 2016: SPOTLIGHT ON THE CZECH REPUBLIC

The Czech Republic reached the Euro 2016 Finals in France this summer by winning their qualifying group convincingly with 22 points. They only lost twice, both times against other teams that made the finals, Turkey and Iceland. Their most impressive feat in the qualifiers was beating footballing powerhouse Holland both home and away. This year's tournament marks the sixth time in a row that the Czechs have reached the finals, an impressive achievement in itself.

However, this year's squad doesn't contain half of the big names it's predecessors did at the turn of the century. Despite this, the Czechs impressive run in the qualifiers shows that they're not a team to be taken lightly.

Their preliminary squad consists of 28 players, whom of which the most interesting one is without a doubt 35-year old Tomáš Rosický. Arsenal's central midfield player has suffered a lot of injuries in recent years, and only managed one start for the club this season. In the last few weeks Rosický has kept his match fitness up by appearing for Arsenal's U21-side.

PREVIEW AND ASSESSMENT

Despite the absence of star players the Czechs managed to score 19 times in the qualifiers, with 11 different names on the scoresheet. Although the Czechs' don't necessarily have the same amount of quality as other sides in Group D, it's a good sign that they have goal-threats from all over the pitch. However, Spain, Croatia and Turkey will offer a stern challenge in the group stages.

34-year old Petr Čech remains the Czechs' last line of defence, but otherwise their defence is full of question marks. Although they won their qualifying group, they let in an unforgivable 14 goals in just 10 matches, the largest amount of any team to reach France this summer. At the finals of a major tournament every goal counts, and a leaky defence rarely leads to success.

Despite their impressive qualifying run the Czechs are the underdogs of Group D. Spain are obviously favourites to be first, while Turkey and Croatia will fight it out for second place. Without any surprises the Czechs will be heading home after the group stage.

Assessment: Fourth in Group D

THE CZECH REPUBLIC'S MOST LIKELY STARTING ELEVEN

Goalkeeper: Čech

Defenders: Kadeřábek, Kadlec, Sivok, Limberský

Midfielders: Plasil; Pavelka, Dockal, Darida, Krejci

Forward: Necid

Key Player: Petr Čech, Arsenal

The Czech national team isn't at the level as it was at it's peak, but one stalwart of that era remains. The 34-year old Čech is a man the country can rely on year after year. The experienced keeper broke the Premier League's record for clean sheets this season and also pocketed the Golden Glove award for most clean sheets this season. More clean sheets are needed if the Czechs are to progress. In the qualifiers they leaked 14 goals, but their goalkeeper was at no fault.
