Morning session:

15:50 MEN'S TRIPLE JUMP FINAL

The men's triple jump statistics this season are dominated by athletes from the United States. Number one Christian Taylor and Will Claye have been in a league of their own, as third-placed India's Renjith Maheswary is 48 centimetres behind this season's leading result. It's therefore no wonder that the two Americans are the favourites in Rio, with the reigning Olympic- and world champion Taylor at a significant advantage. Taylor beat out his domestic rival to gold four years ago in London.

China's Dong Bin and USA's Chris Bernard can be expected to fight it out for bronze, such is the dominance of the two leading Americans. However, the leading duo's main challenger in Rio could be a surprise name, as Cuba's Pedro Pablo Pichardo is yet to compete this season. Pichardo won silver in the world championships last summer, and he also broke the magical 18 metre threshold with a record jump of 18.08.

The recently-crowned European champion Max Hess will also be looking to make an impact on the podium places, and if he manages to deliver a perfect performance he might be able to reach surprising heights in the Olympic final. The German recently broke his record with a jump of 17.20 in the European championships in Amsterdam, so he seems to be in good shape at the perfect time.

15:20 WOMEN'S DISCUS THROW FINAL

The reigning Olympic champion Sandra Perkovic is the only real favourite to win gold in Rio, as her closest competitors have struggled for results and consistency all season. Perkovic has the four longest throws of the season to her name, and has broken the 70m threshold twice this season.

Although Cuba's Denia Caballero is only fifth in this season's standings, she will still most likely be Perkovic's biggest challenger in Rio. Caballero managed to beat Perkovic in last year's world championships final in Beijing, throwing 69.28 to claim gold. Caballero is also the only woman besides Perkovic to throw over 70 metres in her career, although her record throw of 70.65 metres did come over a year ago.

European championships silver medalist Julia Fischer has been slightly more consistent this season than the duo of Yaimi Pérez and Dani Samuels, as Pérez in particular has struggled for results recently (64.91, 59.88, 61.91). Last year's world championships bronze medalist Nadine Müller also has her eyes set on winning a medal, so even if the final turns out to be a dominant performance from Perkovic, the battle for the rest of the medals is going to be intense.

Evening session:

00:30 MEN'S HIGH JUMP FINAL

The men's high jump final in Rio promises to be a hardly-fought contest over the Olympic medals, as all of the leading men have pedigree from major championships. Sadly, reigning Olympic champion Ivan Ukhov won't be in Rio defending his title due to the punishment Russian athletes have received due to the doping scandal in their country.

London 2012 bronze medalist Mutaz Essa Barshim leads the way in this season's statistics, but there are plenty of challengers. Bogdan Bondarenko skipped the European championships to focus on the Olympics, and he is definitely a name to look out for when the going gets tough. The Ukrainian won silver in last year's world championships.

Reigning world champion Derek Drouin will also be heavily involved in the fight for Olympic gold, and the surprise champion of the 2007 world championships shouldn't be forgotten either. With the starting list also featuring names like the silver medalist from London Erik Kynard and Zhang Guowei, who also won silver last year with the same result as Bondarenko, this looks like it could be a final to remember.

The most notable name missing from Rio besides Ukhov is European champion Gianmarco Tamberi, who is sadly out with a last-minute ankle injury. The man second in this season's statistics would have been a fine addition to the competition.

Syria's Majed El Dein Ghazal is the only one of the favourites in Rio not to taste previous success in a major championships. However, his season's best of 2.36 is worth a lot in comparison to the rest, and the man has also gone over 2.33 an impressive three times this season. That result would have been enough for silver in both the last Olympics and last year's world championships!

02:30 WOMEN'S 1500M FINAL

The women's 1500m final also has an impressive list of names, as the entire Top-5 of last year's world championships is competing for gold in Rio. That time out Genzebe Dibaba took gold, while this season's leading woman Faith Kipyegon had to settle for silver. The bronze went to Holland's Sifan Hassan, while the next two positions were occupied by Dawit Seyaum and Laura Muir respectively.

The same quintet will also most likely be at the top in the 1500m final in Rio, but a third Ethiopian, the only 20-year old Besu Sado is also in the fold. If you count the Dutch Hassan as one of the favourites, Poland's Angelika Cichoka is also definitely worth a mention, as she beat Hassan earlier this season to claim gold in the European championships.

Jennifer Simpson of the United States on the other hand was the world champion in 2011 and won silver in 2013, so the experienced American could be a tough nut to crack in Rio as well.

02:45 MEN'S 110M HURDLES FINAL

There's been one name above all others in the men's 110 metre hurdles this season. Jamaica's Omar McLeod is the only athlete to run under 13 seconds this season, but the most note-worthy thing about the Jamaican has been his consistency. At just 22 years of age McLeod has run under 13.10 a staggering five times this season, while his competitors Devon Allen and Orlando Ortega have managed that feat only once all season.

Allen, an also distinguished American footballer broke his personal best with a time of 13.03 at the perfect time during the United States qualifiers for the Olympics, grabbing a ticket to Rio ahead of the likes of reigning Olympic champion Aries Merritt. Formerly of Cuba, the Spanish Ortega was also involved in the games in London, but he failed to make an impact in the final as he came a lowly sixth.

Silver medalist in last year's world championships and bronze winner of London 2012 Hansle Parchment will also be a name involved in the battle for the podium places. The Frenchmen Dimitri Bascou and Pascal Martinot-Lagarde shouldn't be forgotten either, as both can claim a medal with a perfect performance in Rio. Bascou recently claimed the title of European champion in Amsterdam, while Martinot-Lagarde skipped them to concentrate fully on Rio. In last year's world championships Martinot-Lagarde came fourth with his countryman right behind him in fifth.
