6th day of competition - 17-18.8.

!!! All times are UK times!

Morning session:

13:30 MEN'S DECATHLON

Reigning Olympic- and world champion Ashton Eaton is the only favourite for gold in the Rio decathlon. Last year the 28-year old American broke the world record with a huge points total of 9045, while in the games in London Eaton took gold with an over 200 point deficit to his closest competitor. More of the same can be expected in Rio.

Second in this season's standings, Arthur Abele last competed in the Olympics in 2008, but that time out the German was forced to retire after four events. However, now Abele will firmly be in the running for a place on the podium, although major championships success has so far eluded him. Last year's world championships silver medalist Damian Warner is the only other athlete after the two leading men to score a decathlon over 8500 points. Warner came fifth in the London 2012 Olympics.

Another interesting medal hopeful is Lindon Victor, who has broken Granada's national record this season. The 23-year old's record was a measly 7453 in 2015, meaning that Victor has bettered himself by almost a thousand points in just one season! Behind Victor in this season's standings is Kevin Mayer, who won silver in the European championships two seasons ago. Jeremy Taiwo and Zach Ziemek make up the rest of USA's impressive contingent for the men's decathlon in Rio.

Bronze medalist in the last two Olympic games, Leonel Suárez just might make it into the race for a medal this year as well. A possible name on the podium that didn't make the list is last year's world championships bronze medalist Rico Freimuth, who came sixth in the games four years ago.

15:05 MEN'S 3000M STEEPLECHASE FINAL

Kenya's Conseslus Kipruto has been in a league of his own in the men's 3000m steeplechase this season. At just 21 years of age Kipruto has as many as five of the six fastest times this season to his names, and the youngster's fifth fastest time of 8:08.11 is over a second faster than that of this season's ranking second, John Koech.

However, the gold in Rio won't come easy for Kipruto - reigning Olympic champion and four-time world champion Ezekiel Kemboi will make sure of that. The young Kipruto has had to settle for silver in the last two world championships behind Kemboi, but this season's results seem to indicate that the mantle could be on the move.

Kenya's third representative is 2008 Olympic champion Brimin Kipruto, so the African country has really outdone the rest in this event. Besides the Kenyans and Bahrain's Koech a place on the podium is a realistic target for 20-year old Soufiane El Bakkali and Evan Jager, who came sixth in both the last Olympics and world championships.

But what can London 2012 silver medalist Mahiedine Mekhissi-Benabbad do in Rio? The Frenchman was superior in the European championships earlier this summer, but that race was ran at a fairly slow pace. Mekhissi's record is a staggering 8:00.09, but his times this season fail in comparison compared to the rest of the pack. Can the Frenchman keep up, if the Kenyan's start out at a fast pace...?

Evening session:

01:15 WOMEN'S LONG JUMP FINAL

Reigning Olympic champion and three-time world champion Brittney Reese has been in sovereign form in the women's long jump this season. Reese failed miserably at last year's world championships due to a hip injury, and that was the only time the American hasn't made it to a major championships final since 2005. However, this season Reese has been her dominant self and is the leading the way in this season's rankings in superior fashion.

Sosthene Moguenara, who didn't compete in the European championships in Amsterdam to concentrate on the Olympics and Brooke Stratton, who has broken the Oceania record this season are the only other women to jump over 7 metres this season. Another name capable of grabbing a medal is European champion and last year's world championships silver medalist Ivana Spanovic.

The other names in America's strong team for Rio are reigning world champion Tianna Bartoletta and bronze medalist from London Janay DeLoach. Another interesting name in the women's long jump is Darya Klishina, who has avoided the Russian ban of Rio and is competing under the Olympic flag. The same can be said of last year's world championships silver medalist Shara Proctor, although the two mentioned previously don't have results this season that would indicate success in Rio.

02:30 WOMEN'S 200M FINAL

The women's 200 metres is occupied by almost all of the same names as the 100m was, but if Dafne Schippers was a meer challenger on the shorter distance, on the 200m she is the undeniably the favourite. Schippers already won gold in last year's world championships in Beijing in front of the noses of Jamaica's Elaine Thompson and Veronica Campbell-Brown.

The same Jamaica's are her closest challengers this year as well. The trio are joined by the American duo of Tori Bowie and Deajah Stevens, who have both run impressive times this season. However, neither has yet tasted any success in major championships on the 200 metres.

Bahama's Shaunae Miller has this season's third fastest time, but the only 22-year old is also competing in the 400 metres in Rio. The exhausting 400 metres takes place before the 200 metres, which will surely have a negative impact on her ability on the 200m.

Schippers chose not to run the 200m in the European championships in Amsterdam, and Team GB's Dina Asher-Smith is coming to Rio as the reigning European champion. Asher-Smith came fifth in last year's world championships with a fantastic time of 20.07, and if she can replicate that run she could finish surprisingly high in Rio as well.

02:30 WOMEN'S 100M HURDLES FINAL

The women's 100m hurdles have been dominated by American's this season, as there are as many as seven team USA athletes near the top of this season's standings. The undoubted number one out of these women is Keni Harrison, who broke the world record earlier this year with a run of 12.20. Harrison has also ran under 12.50 seven times this season. Only her compatriot Brianna Rollins has managed the same - and she's done it just once.

However, the most incredible thing about Harrison's achievements is that she didn't make her country's team for the Olympics, as she finished a measly sixth in the USA trials for Rio. This makes USA's Rollins, Kristi Castlin and Nia Ali the most likely names to take gold in Rio.

The biggest challengers after the Americans are reigning European champion and last year's world championships silver medalist Cindy Roleder and Alina Talay, who won silver in Amsterdam and bronze in Beijing last year. Puerto Rico's Jasmine Camacho-Quinn has run a respectable time of 12.69 this season, while she also has a wind assisted 12.54 to her name.
