00:55 WOMEN'S TRIPLE JUMP FINAL

This season's number one, reigning world champion Caterine Ibargüen is the favourite to win gold in Rio. The Colombian already came close at the games in London, but that time out Kazakhstan's Olga Rypakova got the gold.

Rypakova isn't the Colombian's main challenger in Rio, as Yulimar Rojas has found some incredible form this season despite her tender age of 20. The youngster has also won the indoor world championship's this season. Rojas and Ibargüen have been in a league of their own this campaign, as they have the top 5 jumps this season.

Another medal hopeful is Paraskevi Papahrístou of Greece, who's season's best of 14.73 is an impressive result. However, otherwise Papahrístou has struggled for good results, as she hasn't managed to go over 14.5 metres since her record jump. Other athletes to get over the threshold include Patricia Mamona and Jamaica's Kimberly Williams.

But wait, what has the experienced Olha Saladukha got to offer? The Ukrainians season's best is a measly 14.40, but the 2011 world champion and three-time European champion has shown that she can handle the pressure of the biggest stages.

02:00 MEN'S 400M FINAL

The men's 400m battle for medals looks to be a three-man show. LaShawn Merritt is coming to Rio with the season's best result, as he's the only man to go under 44 seconds this year with 43.97. However, he isn't the number one favourite to win gold, as that title goes to last year's world champion, Wayde van Niekerk. The South African has been incredibly consistent, as his last four results have all been under 44.3 seconds!

Alongside Merritt and Niekirk the third name most likely to grab a medal is reigning Olympic champion Kirani James, who has also been in inspired form recently. James has clocked 44.60, 44.23, 44.22, 44.15 and 44.08 in his last races. Merritt's last results have been 43.97, 45.05, 45.55, 44.39 and 44.66, although the results over 45 seconds came in the heats of his home championships, where he didn't need to exhaust himself.

Botswana's only 19-year old Baboloki Thebe could be the dark horse in Rio, if he manages to deliver his best possible performance when it really matters. The youngster's record time of 44.22 came as early as May, and he hasn't been able to reach those heights since.

Luguelin Santos who won silver in Rio hasn't been at his best this season, and will most likely not be making an impact on the podium places. The same applies to Thebe's countryman Isaac Makwala, who came fifth in last year's world championships.

02:25 MEN'S 100M FINAL

Definitely the single-most looked-forward to event of the Olympics, and not least due to the showmanship of Usain Bolt. Athletics' number one name is going for his third consecutive gold medals in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay. Bolt has won four major finals in a row.

However, everybody remembers what happened at last year's world championships... That time out Justin Gatlin was more than close to claim Bolt's scalp in the final, but the American got mixed in his strides right before the finish line. Still, Bolt only ended up winning by one hundredth of a second. Gatlin is yet again close to top form, so Bolt must be at his best if he's to continue his winning streak.

Last year's world championships bronze medal winner Trayvon Bromell has had a couple of decent races this season, so his name can be added to the favourites to be on the podium. Jimmy Vicaut of France should have won gold in the European Championships earlier this summer, but that abysmal performance didn't give a good account of the Frenchman's ability under pressure.

Yohan Blake, who won silver in London and Qatar's Femi Ogunode are also looking to make an impact on the podium places. The veteran Kim Collins, who has reached the respectable age of 40 has run 9.93 this season, so who knows what he might be capable of!

The bookies have also listed last year's surprise bronze medal winner Andre De Grasse as one of the potential medal winners in Rio. However, this season the Canadian has only managed 9.99, which isn't even close to the level required at the Olympics. In London it required an astounding 9.79 just to get bronze!

The average times of the leading men's 100m candidates over their last five races:

Gatlin: 9.894 (9.80, 9.83, 10.03, 9.93, 9.88)
Bromell: 9.956 (9.84, 9.86, 9.94, 10.14, 10.00)
Vicaut: 9.994 (10.02, 9.96, 10.08, 10.03, 9.88)
Bolt: 10.020 (10.04, 10.15, 9.88, 9.98, 10.05)
Blake: 10.066 (9.95, 9.95, 10.26, 10.23, 9.94)
Ogunode: 10.078 (10.16, 10.11, 10.01, 10.09, 10.02*)
Ali Harvey: 10.094 (10.07, 10.04, 10.18, 9.92, 10.26)
Simbine: 10.156 (9.89, 10.05*, 10.25*, 10.27, 10.32)
Collins: 10.630 (12.08, 10.16, 10.13, 10.46, 10.32)
